Even if you are not a fan, you surely have heard about basketball because this is one of the most popular sports in the world. There are many personalities who emerged from this field and eventually became famous media figures.
here are some players who were cast on film and TV productions. Many players were also given good spots at commercials and as endorsers to many popular products. There is really no escaping the bug that this widely viewed sports has created all over the globe.
The Basics of the Sport
This sport is played with two teams. Each team has five players who try to get points by shooting the ball at the top of the hoop. The latter, in order to comply with the standard rules, must have a rim that measures 18 inches in diameter and 10 feet high. By shooting the ball, a team can get two points if the player made the shot inside the half circle and three points if the player is at the back circle.
The team with the most number of points by the end of the game would win. If the points of the two teams will be the same when the buzzer signals the end of the game, an extension or overtime is going to be called to see who would win.
The sport has also adopted many changes through time. These helped the game to become more exciting and appealing to more people. There are various techniques that have been implemented on passing, shooting and dribbling. Most competitive leagues mostly play the game indoors, but there are huge numbers of outdoor courts and playing venues that have been adopted by many city and rural areas all over the world.
Looking Back
The invention of the game or its foundation is attributed to Dr. James Naismith. He was an instructor at the International Young Men's Christian Association Training School, which is now known as the Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. It was in December 1981 when Dr. Naismith wrote the basic rules of the kind of game, which he intended to help his students keep fit and occupied even during rainy and winter seasons. He nailed a peach basket on an elevated track of 3.05 meters. The basket retained its bottom, so the balls need to be manually retrieved after a point is scored. Eventually, the bottom of the basket was removed, making the game more fun and efficient.
In 1906, the peach baskets were replaced by metal hoops with backboards. The innovations keep on happening with the equipment until it has become the kind of game that you are currently used to.
Dr. Naismith was nervous about the game that he invented, as he stated on his diaries that were discovered by his granddaughter in 2006. He utilized some rules from a kid’s game known as Duck on a Rock on the sport that he named as Basket Ball.
It was on January 20, 1892 when the first official game of basketball was played at the YMCA gym. Through time, the sport keeps on increasing the numbers of people who are interested to participate or simply watch the action while rooting for their favorite teams.

As the month of March approaches, the frenzy of college basketball fans starts to build up—the traditional March Madness comes. With the start of March Madness comes office pools, gambling and bookies. However, before March Madness comes, you need to be familiar with bracketology.
Bracketology, the study of brackets, is a technique for picking teams which many analysts, sportscaster, and networks tried to nail down. Though it does not guarantee success, it gives one a leg up on competition.
March Madness is the peak of a college basketball season, which starts in November. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the governing body that oversees around 1,200 voluntary college and university members.
The first tournament of March Madness occurred in 1939 with eight teams. Then, the tournament expanded to 16 teams in 1951. After two years, it became 22 and in 1975, it went up to 32 teams. By 1985, there were already 64 teams. Lately, the 65th team was added in 2001.
Now, here are some considerations to start your bracketing.
The NCAA basketball season begin with 327 Division I men's teams. The selection committee narrows the 327 down to 65 men’s team and 64 women’s basketball teams. Here, start placing the teams in bracket. In the 31 conferences of NCAA Division I men's basketball, there are championship game except for the Ivy League. Winners of these conferences are automatically invited.
The remaining 34 teams are selected by the selection committee by Selection Sunday. Their criteria to choose teams include ranking in the national polls, conference record, road record, wins versus ranked opponents, how a team finishes its regular season, and rating Percentage Index (RPI).
The location of the schools is another factor in filling out your bracket. The committee put each team, particularly the top seeds, in the region closest to its school. It is strategically profiting because more fans can attend games when the location is near.
To further fill in your bracket, most experts say use your intuition for there is no scientific basis to guarantee success so far. It is important to remember that all games throughout the NCAA basketball season are single-elimination format. This means, when your team loses, you are out of the tournament.
In Round 1, the teams are now 32 from 64. Remember that a No.16 seed has never beaten a No. 1. So, do not dare do it. In the next round, the 32 teams are cut in half leaving 16 teams only. Note that as the number of teams gets smaller, it is trickier to pick winners.
Remember that No. 2 seed are most likely to be defeated.
Round 3 is the Sweet 16. Experts say that No. 1 seed will likely lose this round. The next round is the Elite 8. There are only four games in this round with each team vying for a place at the Final Four. This is usually anyone’s game. Round 5 is the Final Four. It is an instinctual round. Teams will vie for the championship game. The last round will determine the national champion and either team could win. At times when you do not know who to pick, choose the higher seed.
Some people make careers in bracketology and office pools, while some make a religion out of it. For example, a group of college basketball fans in New York established “The Church of Bracketology." However, do take note that NCAA tournament has some fatal consequences. Some resort to killing because of it.

Basketball has only been popular during the time of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Any basketball history before that is unclear. However, it is injustice not to mention great basketball players in the 1940s, 50s, 60s, and 70s.
Take for example the basketball superstar George Mikan. He, a 6'10" goof, was a sensational inside scorer, rebounder, and shot-blocker. Another legendary player is Bill Russell, who is comparable to Patrick Ewing. Russell had an ultimate defensive presence. He rejected approximately 8 to 10 shots a game. He had as many rebounds as Ewing.
Witt Chamberlain is a famous 100 pointer in a game. Three months before the fateful night, he had games of 60, 78, 61, 60, 73, 62, 62, 62, 65, 67, 61, 67, 65 and 61 points. He played during the 1961-62 season with an average of 48.5 minutes per game.
Before Magic got the tag, there was “Mobile Magician.” He was Bob Cousy, who is also known as “Houdini of the Hardwood.” Cousy had an excellent backward pass, twice-around pass, and behind-the-back dribble.
Meanwhile, Jerry West was a great basketball player because of his admirable long-range bombers. He topped the key and filled up from the corner.
Some remarkable and famous players who make the Cow Palace filled with fans during the late 1960s are Pete Maravich, Bill Walton, Bill Bradley, Austin Carr, Ralph Sampson, and Tom Gola. Most especially Maravich, he shot and scored from every spot in the half court and scored 44.2 points a game.
Of course, when naming people who contributed to the great basketball history, coaches should not be excluded from it. These include Adolph Rupp, John Wooden, Dean Smith, and Pat Riley. Indeed, they coached the talented players in history.
Looking into the masters of the court who made remarkable fast breaks and slam dunks, one must take a glimpse at every actor in the actor—guards, forwards, centers, and coaches.
Guards play a vital role in team’s strategy. They rack up points from beyond the three-point line. They direct the flow of the team’s offense. They definitely play a significant role. An example of an excellent guard who has an innovative ball-handling is Cousy.
The list of great basketball forwards includes both men and women. They perform the astounding lay-ups, slam dunks, rebounds, and steals. One of the famous forwards are Scottie Pippen with his award-winning defensive skills, Charles Barkley with his extreme use of the Round Mound of Rebound, and Paul Arizin who has an extraordinarily unmatched jump-shot.
Meanwhile, you may be most familiar with basketball centers. The list of notable players in basketball history consists of mostly centers. Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Meadowlark Lemon, and Shaquille O’Neal are famous centers. Abdul-Jabbar played for twenty seasons, whereas O’Neal had multimedia appearances such as film, music, television, and video games.
In addition to the list of great basketball players, the history of basketball can never be complete without the people on the sidelines—the coach. They provide guidance, support, and encouragement. They train players in their own ways and supply differing strategies on the court. For example Knight is known for his military style while Riley is a statistic-driven coach.
Last but not the least is James Naismith who completes the legend of basketball history. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is named after him. It is an institution which honored and celebrated the game’s brightest stars.

When first week of March comes, college students go gaga over basketball. This is called the March Madness which goes through until first week of April. This is an American tradition.
March Madness is the name given to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCCA) Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments. These tournaments decide the basketball champions of college basketball. The tournament is composed of 65 teams vying for college basketball championship.
Today, March madness is always associated with the NCAA Basketball Tournament. However, the term was first used to illustrate the annual Illinois High School Association tournament. It is another basketball tournament. Reporter Henry V. Porter first used this term in his 1939 article in the Illinois Interscholastic magazine, “March Madness.”
In 1982, CBS reporter Brent Musburger used the term in 1982 during the telecast of a tournament game. This started to be associated with NCCA basketball tournaments. After a court battle, the term March Madness is now co-owned by NCAA and IHSA through the March Madness Athletic Association.
Now, let us take a glimpse of the processes undertaken in this tradition that sends millions of fans into frenzy.
The NCAA is a single governing body that oversees around 1,200 voluntary college and university members comprising the association. These volunteers make rules to ensure a fair game among all intercollegiate athletics. Only active members, which are 1,006 among the 1,200 volunteers, are allowed to compete in tournaments.
The 1,006 active members are divided into three categories called the college basketball divisions. The Division I is the most famous among the three divisions. It receives most of the publicity. Division I is composed of schools that sponsor either at least seven sports for men and women or six for men and eight for women.
Furthermore, they have a minimum and maximum number of scholarships to award.
Meanwhile, Division II is composed of schools that must sponsor at least four sports for men and women. Unlike the Division I, there are no minimum home game requirements for this division. Division III must sponsor at least five sports for men and women. Schools in this division do not offer athletic scholarships.
There are 327 teams competing in Division I. A selection committee chooses the teams for both the men's and women's tournaments. The selection committee is composed of select university athletic directors and conference commissioners, who meet between Thursday and Sunday before the first game.
Around 31 teams get an automatic invite to the tournament. The other invites, 34 for men and 33 for women, are selected of course by the selection committee.
The tournament is played over a period of three weeks – from 1st week of March through 1st week of April. It traditionally begins on the third Thursday in March. On the first two full days of the tournament, the field of 64 teams is pared to 32. In the next two days, the field is trimmed to 16, which is called the Sweet 16. They take a four-day break and resume play on the next Thursday.
On the second week of the tournament, there are four teams left surviving. The tournaments of Final Fours are played in April. The March Madness ends when the basketball champion is determined. Then, it will start again next year.

Obesity and over-weight cases among children in the United States have increased. According so several studies, nearly 50% of children in the United States will be obese. Aside from proper diet, exercise and involving children in physical activity could help battle obesity. Basketball is a great way of involving children into sports and helping them develop their social skills.
Basketball, as an indoor sport, could be played all the year round in school or local gym. All you need is just a ball, a hoop and a court. Parents understand that it is important to incorporate physical activity into their children’s daily schedule. However, not all parents are aware that involving their children in team sports could also help them learn important social lessons like teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership.
Basketball is one of the most popular team sports which could help your child have new friends while burning their energy. Basketball can build endurance, especially, if three to four time a week. Since basketball is a full body workout itself, it would develop different muscle groups in the body.
Basketball could also help children develop hand and feet coordinate and could improve balance. Shooting the ball inside the ring would fully utilize your child’s arms, hands, legs, and feet movement while visualizing or surveying their environment. This is a great reason why basketball could be played by children, it could develop overall coordination. Energy and stamina would increase through playing basketball.
The sport would include walking, running, and jumping, which would use all muscles in your child’s upper and lower body.
As a physical sport, sprains and other sport related injuries could happen. Proper training could help in reducing the risks of injuring calves, knees, and pulling your hamstring. Make sure that your children would be getting warm-up and stretching exercises before playing basketball.
Basketball is not only good for your child’s physical health, it could also benefit you child’s mental game. Your child will learn how to be a team-player, think of strategies and execute plays while under pressure. Basketball players also develop higher concentration and focus even if there are different kinds of distractions around.
There are also studies conducted by the Women’s Sports Foundation that adolescents who are regularly involved in team sports are less likely to use drugs, be in abusive relationships and have higher chances of finishing high school and continuing to college. They develop self-confidence, making them physically, mentally and emotionally healthy.
Involving your kid in a sport like basketball would help your child in becoming a well-rounded person. It is important for parents to reinforce whatever positive attitude their children learned from the sport.
Basketball is quite popular, that if your child would be able to excel in the sport, he or she may even have a chance of getting sports scholarship and great career opportunities.
By involving your child in basketball or other team sport, you would be able to provide a venue for your child to develop physically and socially. The values that your child would learn from playing the sport may sound so simple, but these values would eventually help them as they grow older.

A basketball may refer to the game or the ball that is used in it. If you are interested about the ball, it is essential to note that it actually varies in size depending on its purpose. For example, the promotional items are usually smaller than the ones used in training exercises. The kind that is used in the professional leagues, such as the NBA measures 29.5 in circumference.
Where It All Started
The game was invented by Dr. James Naismith on December 1891. He was a physical education professor at the International Young Men's Christian Association Training School. He worked on the idea after he was instructed by the chairman of his department to come up with an activity that will keep the students active and busy during the winter season. The first game was played using soccer ball that the players need to shoot at the peach baskets that are nailed at both ends of the gymnasium.
As the game becomes more improved and efficient, the ball was also changed. The first ones were made from panels of leather. These were sewn together after a rubber bladder was placed inside. To attain uniformity, a cloth lining was added to the leather.
This also becomes a good support to the overall structure of the ball.
It was in 1942 when a molded version of the ball was introduced, with leather that remained the top choice as coverings of the ball for many years.
On the latter part of the 90s, the ball embraced good changes and advancements when composite materials were used on it. This has become popular because it can withstand harsh outdoor conditions and this is able to deliver better performance than the original type.
During official competitions, different leagues give out official rules about the specifications of the ball that must be used in the game. There are various aspects that they look into in setting the rules, which include the circumference of the ball, weight, bounce, inflation pressure, materials used and color.
For the International Basketball Federation or FIBA, the ball must have the size of seven and it must have the manufacturer’s name and its serial number. The materials where the ball is made from can be genuine or synthetic leather, and it must not contain any types of toxic materials. The circumference can be between 749 to 780 mm.
For the National Collegiate Athletic Association or NCAA, the ball must measure 29.5 to 30 inches in circumference. The bouncing ability of the ball must only be between 49 and 54 inches when it is dropped from a 6 feet height.
The National Basketball Association or the NBA has only one official ball that is manufactured by Spaldin. This has the orange color, with a circumference of 29.5 inches and weighs 22 ounces.
Holding the ball and learning ways to shoot and pass it around is an integral part of each player’s practice. If you want to be good at the game, you have to train using the kind of basketball that is used by the professional leagues.
This way, it will be easier for you to gauge your pulse and strengths, and enhance on your weaknesses through constant practice and training.

There are many basketball professional leagues around the world. This is such a feat for the game’s creator, Dr. James Naismith. Who would have thought that the game that Naismith conceptualized to help his students keep fit and active during rainy and winter seasons will emerge as one of the most popular and widely watched sports all around the globe?
It was on December 1981 when Naismith came up with the first rules about the game that he originally called Basket Ball. He was then a physical education professor and instructor at the International Young Men's Christian Association Training School at in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA.
The school is now known as the Springfield College. He went through many trial and error processes before he finally was able to implement the first look of the game. Through time, various improvements have been implemented to make the game more efficient and more fun to watch and play.
Since its conception, there have been many changes and innovations that were implemented on the game to make it what it is today. This is why many countries have also created their professional leagues, which is one good sign that the sport is indeed popular.
Professional Leagues
Here’s a look at some of the leagues that can be found at various countries where the sport is popular and many people are hooked about the game as well as the players.
National Basketball Association
This league is the product of the union of the Basketball Association of America and the National Basketball League. The American Basketball Association was created in 1967 and this actually posed a threat on the NBA’s dominance. In 1976, another historical merge happened between the two groups that created a powerful lineup of teams and paved the way for the NBA to be hailed as the top professional league in the world when it comes to this sport. It is the top when it comes to various aspects such as the popularity of the game and most of its players, the salary range of the players, the talent of those who are involved in the game and the level of competition that it brings every time a game is on.
Women's National Basketball Association
This league that in backed up by the NBA was formed in 1997. It suffered from a shaky start, but it was able to stand up above the rest and confirms its spot on the league. WNBA was able to seal a lucrative deal with ESPN for 2009 to 2016. According to figures, this gets more viewership than the NHL and Major League Soccer.
National Basketball League Australia
This started in 1979 and it currently has eight teams from various parts of Australia and one from New Zealand. There are some players from the league that made it big in the international scene, such as Luc Longley, Shane Heal, Andrew Gaze, Andrew Bogut and Chris Anstey.
Philippine Basketball Association
This is known to be the second oldest basketball league in the world. Its first game was held on April 9, 1975 at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Philippines. There were nine teams that participated on the first season of the league.
